Patient Experiences for New TV Health Program

Tonic is a new weekly program to be aired on ABC News24, starting in May.

Produced by Karen Carey and hosted by Norman Swan, it will be a fast-moving, entertaining and compelling show which will have a strong consumer focus. Tonic will aim to bust health myths and tell you things you didn't know - but wish you had.

Tonic is the only mainstream health program that is committed to providing information that is evidence based, and its success will depend on our featuring important patient experiences that demonstrate both the strengths and weaknesses in healthcare.

Tonic is seeking people who have had experiences in the healthcare system in the following categories:

1. Adverse events relating to:
    • medicines
    • medical devices
    • health care

2. High Blood Pressure
People with high blood pressure who are managing it with or without medication

3. Mental Health First Aid
Family or carers of people who have had a mental health emergency describing what happened during the crisis – describing whether or not they got access to services (identity can be disguised by request)

4. Anemia
Person who has had anemia talking about the symptoms of anemia and time to diagnosis, challenges of treatment, new lease of life if properly treated

5. Cosmetic enhancement
Person who gets fillers in their face regularly, likes the result and would be willing to talk about it!

6. Teeth whitening
Someone who had a negative experience with teeth whitening products such as weakening of the enamel or increased pain in gums

7. Eczema
Child with severe eczema and their mother to talk about challenges of finding effective treatment

8. Diet products and weight loss
Woman who has suffered negative impact from taking diet pills

9. Arthroscopy
People who have had an arthroscopy

10. Dizziness
People who have sustained intermittent dizziness, who have been diagnosed after a long time of seeing multiple doctors

11. Young people and alcohol
Anyone who is willing to talk about their own experience either as a young person or a parent of a young person abusing alcohol (identity can be disguised if required)

12. Headaches
People who have suffered from moderate to severe headaches for more than 3 months

13. Anxiety disorders in young people
Adults who suffered from an anxiety condition under the age of 16 or the parents of a child with an anxiety disorder (identify can be disguised to protect patient privacy if required)

14. Testosterone supplements
Men or women who have used testosterone supplements both successfully and unsuccessfully

15. Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome
Women with this PCOS

16. Angioplasty
People with blocked arteries who have had angiography and stents

17. Lower back pain
People who has suffered from lower back pain for more than 2 years and who have tried multiple treatments e.g. pain killers, physio, exercise, lifestyle changes or surgery

18. Pain management
People who have long term pain as a result of trauma e.g. car accident, surgery etc

19. PSA testing
People who have had PSA testing and/or a positive biopsy and have chosen to either have or not have a prostatectomy

20. Depression
People who have received treatment for depression (identity can be disguised if required)

21. Joint Replacements
Anyone who has required re-operation less than 5 years after a joint replacement
