Baby blues is a SHORT TERM condition which is characterised by:
- Mood swings
- Weepiness
- Sadness
- Anxiety
- Lack of concentration
- Feelings of dependency
Up to 80% of mothers will experience the baby blues. The condition is real, it is not imagined, and some of the things that contribute to it are rapid hormonal changes, the physical and emotional stress of birthing, and anxiety about increased responsibility.
These symptoms tend to peak 3-5 days after giving birth. Treatment is not normally required because as hormone levels return to normal, recovery from the birth progresses, and the family takes the baby home, emotional health improves.
If symptoms last for more than 2 weeks, it may be the start of postnatal depression and you should seek support from your GP or child health nurse.
IF YOU THINK YOUR PARTNER OR BABY WOULD BE BETTER OFF WITHOUT YOU, OR ARE HAVING THOUGHTS OF SUICIDE, CONTACT A HEALTH PROFESSIONAL IMMEDIATELY.
