Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychological condition triggered by a major traumatic event. While a formal PTSD diagnosis can only be made in the wake of severe trauma, it is possible to have a mild PTSD-like reaction following less severe stress.

Among the symptoms of PTSD are flashbacks, during which the sufferer relives the traumatic event and may completely lose touch with reality, believing that the traumatising event is actually happening all over again.

The most helpful treatment for PTSD appears to be a combination of medication along with cognitive behaviour therapies.
